- The Police Force of Nigeria started in 1820.
- Armed paramilitary Hausa Constabulary was established in 1879
- In 1888 ,Royal Niger Company set up Royal Niger Constabulary in the North.
- In 1894,Niger Coast Protectorate police was formed in Calabar.
- The Police in Lagos was established in 1896.
- In the colonial era, the major part of the police was connected with the local (native) Authority.
- In the 1960s, during the First Republic, Police forces were regionalized and then nationalized.
- In the 60’s NPF officers were not allowed to carried weapons except on certain tasks or circumstances.
- Do you know that the colonial Nigerian Police force officers were not allowed to use guns but only sticks to enforce the law? That is why they got the name “Olopaa” from the Yorubas which translates to “A person with a stick”
