- Mother To An Ex-President, Ex-Vice President
- Daughter, Three Granddaughters Married To Governors
With the 2023 General Election looming, the family home of Hajjia Aya Dada Yar’Adua, the mother of late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua and the matriarch of the Tafida Shehu Musa Yar’Adua political dynasty has become a mecca of some sorts with politician aspiring to emerge as president of the country falling all over themselves to pay her a visit and seek her blessing.
At the last count, no fewer than five presidential aspirants from the two major political parties, the ruling All-Progressives Congress (APC) and the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP)have all paid the ageing Matriarch of the Yar’Adua political dynasty a visit.
They are Vice President Yemi Osinbajo; former governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi; Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State; Former Senate President, Bukola Saraki and former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar who have all expressed interest to contest for the highest seat in the land in 2023 have all paid her a visit to seek her blessings.
Vice President Osinbajo on the sideline of his visit to the Katsina Emirate on Sunday, January 30, 2022, took out the time of his busy schedule to pay her a courtesy visit.
Similarly, Peter Obi, former Governor of Anambra state, and presidential aspirant under the PDP visited her after meeting with PDP stakeholders in Katsina State on Sunday, May 15.
Former Senate President, Senator Abubakar Bukola Saraki visited her earlier in January 2022.
Wike, who is also a presidential aspirant on the PDP, visited the aged mother on Tuesday, May 3, alongside former Governor Ibrahim Shema.
The latest politician to visit Ma Yar’Adua is former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, who on Wednesday, May 18, visited her in Katsina. Vice President Atiku Abubakar often refers to her as his ‘political mother’.
This was part of his campaign schedule for the North-Western part of the country.
“My visit to Katsina would be incomplete without a stopover at the Yar’Adua family compound. Hajjia Aya Dada Yar’Adua, the mother of my late mentor, Tafida Shehu Musa Yar’Adua and former President Umaru Yar’Adua, has been a mother figure to me since my association with the family,” Atiku tweeted on his official Twitter handle.
What makes her tick and a toast of politician many has wondered. Her husband was Musa Yar’Adua, he is the patriarch of the Yar’Adua family. He was born in 1912. He was a Nigerian administrator and politician who served as the Minister of Lagos Affairs during Nigeria’s First Republic. Yar’Adua was minister when Lagos Island and the capital territory were designated as the city of Lagos in 1963. His own father was Umaru Mutawallin, a Katsina chief whose title made him the Royal treasurer of the kingdom.
Two of his sons went on to leave indelible marks on the history of Nigeria’s politics. Shehu Musa Yar’Adua is the first son of Musa Yar’Adua and the elder brother of Umaru Musa Yar’Adua. He was the Chief of Staff, at Supreme Headquarters between 1976 to 1979. His post is equivalent to the position of Vice president. Some of his political students include, Atiku Abubakar, Bola Tinubu, Rabiu Kwankwaso, Chuba Okadigbo among others.
His younger brother Umaru Musa Yar’Adua was the president of Nigeria between 2007 to 2010. He was the youngest political gladiator of the family and the most powerful. He was formerly the governor of Katsina state before becoming the president of Nigeria. He died in office in 2010.
Her female children are not doing bad either. One of Hajjia’s daughters, Zainab is married to the governor of Kebbi State in Nigeria, while three of her granddaughters are also married to former governors. They are Zainab Yar’Adua Dakingari, Nafisat Yar’Adua Yuguda and Maryam Shehu Shema.
The Yar’Aduas Political Dynasty is massive in Northern Nigeria as many people all over Nigeria benefited from them, people as Raymond Dokpesi, Pat Utomi, MKO Abiola, Rabiu Kwankwaso, Chuba Okadigbo among others and many new generation Politicians including Abubakar Atiku and Bola Ahmed Tinubu under the Social Democratic Party (SDP).
The Yar’Adua’s apolitical group-the Peoples Democratic Movement (PDM) is regarded as one of the strongest political machinery in the country. Through careful planning, organisational skill and adroitness, the PDM become a force to be reckoned with politically.
With such a strong background, it is no wonder that the family and the matriarch have become the toast of politicians.
