2023: Political Parties Pitch Tents With Artistes As Running Mate

Political parties in Nigeria are fast pitching their tents with Nollywood Actors as the choice of running mates in a bid to tap into the popularity and cult-like following of the actors to sway electorates.

Caroline Danjuma, a popular Nigerian actress, has been unveiled as the running mate of Iboro Otu, the governorship candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) joining the likes of Tonto Dike, Funke Akindele and Femi Branch who have earlier been named as running mates to governorship candidates in Rivers State, Lagos State and Ogun State respectively

 

In a statement released on Monday, the party said Danjuma was picked as running mate based on her “exemplary life, love for humanity, leadership ability and commitment towards the betterment of Akwa Ibom communities.”

 

The reality star took to her Instagram page to disclose that now is the time to serve the people of Akwa Ibom and Nigeria at large.

 

“To serve and to honour in loyalty and in truth to Akwa- Ibom and Nigeria. So, help me God,” she wrote.

 

Danjuma, who hails from Eket in Akwa Ibom, is an award-winning actress and a businesswoman.

 

She attended the University of Calabar for her first degree after which she had her MBA and a Masters in International Law and Diplomacy (MILD) at the University of Lagos and Edinburgh business school respectively.

 

Danjuma becomes the fourth Nollywood star to be named as running mate ahead of the 2023 governorship elections.

Tonto Dikeh (ADC, Rivers State)

Nollywood actress, Tonto Dikeh, was nominated as the running mate to Tonte Ibraye, the 2023 governorship candidate of the African Democratic Party (ADC) in Rivers State.

 

The actress said the ADC would invest “massively in social protection” in Rivers State if they are elected.

 

“We are looking forward to investing massively in social protection, creating a social value system for young people, increasing women’s inclusion in our governance system, supporting small businesses and strengthening our traditional institutions to be active players in the drive to bring sustainable development to the good people of Rivers State,” she said in her post.

 

She thanked Mr Ibraye for her nomination and urged the people to get their Permanent Voters Card (PVC) and “join the movement”.

 

Ms Dikeh’s post on Instagram has garnered over 12, 000 likes and 1,700 comments from her fans who have been congratulating her on the nomination.

 

Funke Akindele (PDP, Lagos State)

 

Funke Akindele was also announced as the running mate of the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Lagos, Olajide Adediran, ahead of the 2023 general election.

 

Mr Adediran, popularly called Jandor, chose Ms Akindele among a list of five nominees which include Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, Kolawole Vaughan, Adenike Shobajo, and Rasheed Teslim-Balogun.

 

Ms Akindele, popularly known as Jenifa, was officially unveiled in Ikorodu her hometown.

 

In a video she shared on her official Instagram page, Ms Akindele said her decision to accept the position was an opportunity to help liberate and improve the welfare of Lagosians, “particularly the deprived youth, women, and the girl child.”

 

“My decision is not only to accept this huge responsibility but also to work tirelessly and complement Jandor’s burning desire to see our dear state of Lagos live up to its potential with the people as its immediate and direct beneficiaries.”

 

 

Femi Branch (NRM, Ogun State)

Femi Branch, the actor, has been named as the running mate to Tofunmi Ogunronbi, governorship candidate of the National Rescue Movement (NRM) in Ogun state, ahead of 2023.

 

The film star announced that he was picked as Ogunrobi’s deputy in a statement shared via his Instagram page on Saturday.

 

According to the statement, Ogunronbi, better known as DTO, unveiled Branch as his running mate on Friday.

 

The NRM guber candidate said he picked the Ogun-born actor because he believes he would add more value to his candidacy.

 

Buttressing his point, Ogunronbi said the movie star has been vocal against bad governance and social injustice.

 

He added that Branch has a “clear understanding of the task ahead and the need to work with a co-visionary with a shared passion for the emancipation of the good people of the state.”
