Senator Abdullahi Adamu has emerged as the national chairman of the All-Progressives Congress (APC), about a year and nine months after the Adams Oshiomhole led National Working Committee (NWC) was dissolved.
He was returned unopposed on Saturday at the party’s national convention held at Eagle Square in Abuja, the nation’s capital.
Governor Abubakar Badaru of Jigawa State announced Adamu as the winner of the contest after he was endorsed by party members and leaders at the convention via a voice vote.
He had gone into the election as the consensus candidate following the withdrawal of his co-contenders from the contest.
The coast for became clear for Adamu earlier in the day when in line with the consensus arrangement, six aspirants vying for the position of the Chairman of the All-Progressives Congress have withdrawn from the race to back President Muhammadu Buhari’s anointed candidate Senator Abdullahi Adamu.
The aspirants are Sen. Tanko Al-Makura, Sen George Akume, Abdulaziz Yari, Sen. Mohammed Musa, Mohammed Saidu Etsu, and Turaki Saliu Mustapha.
They wrote to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha to inform him of their withdrawal from the race and the support for the president’s candidate.
In the letter seen by The Matrix, the candidates withdrew from the race to back President Buhari’s anointed candidate.
“May I kindly refer to the appeal by Mr. President for the Chairmanship aspirant of our great party to agree to a consensus agreement wherein our colleague Sen Adamu Abdullahi is made our consensus candidate for the chairmanship position and forward letters of withdrawal from the under listed aspirants to wit” the letter stated.
The letters were later handed over to the Secretary to the Federal Government, Mr. Boss Mustapha at about 2 am for onward transmission to President Muhammadu Buhari.
Meanwhile, despite the intrigue and powerplay that characterized the last days of Gov. Mai Mala Buni’s tenure as Chairman, All Progressives Congress (APC) Caretaker and Extra-ordinary Convention Planning Committee (CECPC), the Yobe State governor bowed out in glory on Saturday while canvassing the party’s members across the country to support the party new leadership.
He made the call while giving his valedictory speech at the ongoing APC National Convention, saying that such support was critical to keep the party united and in its winning ways in 2023 and beyond.
Buni expressed delight at the presence of party members at the National Convention, which he described as epoch-making.
“As you are aware, the CECPC which l was opportune to chair is a child of circumstance constituted by the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the party to restructure and reposition it.
“To the glory of God, and with your generous support, we collectively rescued the party and enriched its fortunes,” Buni said.
“As we elect the new national officials, l call on every member of the party to please support and co-operate with the leaders from ward to the national levels.
“We should please bury our differences and collectively work for the interest and success of our party; this is very necessary for us to approach the 2023 general election with a united front.
“We can only achieve much in unity, just like the broom which is our party symbol.
“Our support to the new leadership would no doubt promote internal democracy and the emergence of popular, credible, and generally acceptable candidates to fly the party’s flag in the 2023 elections,” Buni stressed.
He expressed gratitude and appreciation to President Buhari, Osinbajo, the Progressives Governors Forum (PGF), and the party’s leadership for the support he enjoyed as chairman of the APC CECPC.
He particularly appreciated President Buhari for what he called his uncommon commitment and leadership style that guided the committee to record some modest achievements for the party.
Buni added that the teamwork, cooperation, and unity exhibited by his colleagues in the CECPC in the course of the assignment had been exceptional.
This, he said, had truly made the committee extra-ordinary, adding that they were indeed a family.
Buni lauded the party’s other stakeholders, delegates, staff of the party’s national secretariat, the youth, women’s groups, and supporters nationwide for their cooperation.
“I am now more confident than ever, that with a population of over 41 million registered members and still counting.
“The APC has the potential and capacity to remain Nigeria’s ruling party and indeed, Africa’s largest political party,” he said.
Also speaking at the event, Gov. Abubakar Bagudu of Kebbi and Chairman of Progressives Governors Forum (PGF), said there was no party like the APC.
He added that though the party had some challenges, they were not insurmountable.
In a related development, Abdullahi O. Haruna (Haruspice) a core Buharist and author of the book ‘The Buhari in Us’ has disclosed how Buhari managed to outwit the governors who planned to hijack the party’s structure.
In a piece titled “The foxy political strategist,” Haruna said, “Underrate him at your peril, he holds the ace of strategic impulse, deeply unassuming but perilously a master strategist”.
Still a grand guru of unpredictability and a political mystery. Till date, no one has been able to dissect and give an exact diagnosis of the man called Muhammadu Buhari.
Experts in the study of body language and gesture are still in awe of the man, political clairvoyants are still in limbo on the impenetrable nature of the man, close aides have been rendered strangers to the inner workings of the mind of this Daura born political enigma. Like he once said, indeed, his mind belongs to everyone and to no one – the very reason he has remained a mystery.
In the last month, the All-Progressives Congress, APC was in the eyes of a tumultuous storm, the party was embroiled in a litany of political intrigues, manipulations, and fierce internal struggles. Camps outwit camps as groups battle groups in wits and propaganda.
It got to a point where all hell was let loose as the actors went publicly ballistic in embarrassing fights of attrition. All these narrowed down to one forte; the 2023 general elections. Who becomes who and what were the crux of the fierce battles and the house was near its collapse? Until one man who undoubtedly is the rope that ties the broom waded in and in a telepathic switch everything returned to the default setting, and the ruling party roars back to life.
He first warned in measured words, that the party must not make the mistake of ever allowing the main opposition People’s Democratic Party, PDP return to power. With this sinking into the consciousness of the party faithful defined in belligerence interests, the president reeled out his intervention in what pundits now describe as mechanical and choreographed traces of purposeful leadership.
Indeed, politics is consultation laced with deep reflections given the recent happenings in the APC. The conclusion is that the President is not only fully aware of everything and everyone and all the schemings under him but has a tap on every move to the minutest details. He was just observing like a veteran war General awaiting the clinical time to strike.
Mr. President is not only in charge but fully in charge. The four meetings held within the last 48 hours are proof that he understands Wetin dey play. First with the governors, followed by the party aspirants, the National Assembly caucus of the party, and then the founding fathers of the party.
These deft moves show the man genuinely means well for APC and Nigeria as I have always known and hold in respect to all critical stakeholders and the value they bring onto the table. You do not ever take a General for granted or undermine their war strategy.
A day to National Convention and PMB has met with virtually all critical stakeholders of the Party. Leaving everything to this injury time is to me a strategy anchored on appropriate timing and a period when there will be no time to retreat to regroup.
Make no mistake each of those stakeholders is fully under the radar. ‘If you no fear Military, try fear General’ especially the old fox with unpredictable acumen. President Olusegun Obasanjo did the same in 2007 for PDP and BOOM President Umaru Yar’Adua appeared.
If you remember President Buhari’s famous bombshell of January 2022 during his chat with Channels TV where he said “If I reveal my preferred successor, they will eliminate him” then you can understand that the man is undoubtedly a strategist of inimitable pair.
