A Housemaid, Ms Okoro, has told the police in Benin, the Edo State capital, how she killed Mrs. Maria Oredola Igbinedion, mother of former governor of the state, Chief Lucky Igbinedion.
The 25-year-old maid who was employed a year and three months before the incident, said she killed the 85-year-old by hitting her on the head with a stool on December 2 while she was asleep.
Okoro made the shocking revelation while being paraded alongside other suspects at the state police headquarters, Benin.
She said she took with her Ma Igbinedion’s N100,000, a wristwatch and jewellery as she left the Igbinedion’s palatial home in Government Reservation Area (GRA), Benin.
“I killed Mama (Ma Igbinedion) to carry her money. She did not offend me. While she was sleeping on her bed, around 12:01 a.m. on December 2, 2021, I used a stool to hit her on the head and she was shouting for help, but only the gateman was around and he did not hear the shout. Mama later died,” she said.
“I waited till 4am on December 2, 2021, before leaving the house with Mama’s N100,000, wristwatch, and jewelry. I escaped to Cross River State, but I was later arrested by the police.”
Mrs. Igbinedion was buried in Benin on December 10 after a funeral service at St. Augustine Catholic Church.
The maid’s elder sister, Patience, was first arrested by the police before the prime suspect was apprehended and moved to Benin for investigation.
Patience Okoro said neither she nor their parents in Cross River knew anything about the alleged crime.
Commissioner of Police, Phillip Ogbadu, said it took time, efforts and money to arrest the suspect, with no fewer than 20 persons arrested in connection with Ma Igbinedion’s killing.
Ogbadu said the maid had confessed to the crime, adding that all the suspects would soon be charged to court.
He said there are collaborators in every crime.
