Mane, Salah Poised For Face-off As Egypt Beat Cameroon On Penalties To Reach AFCON Final

Liverpool Football Club’s duo of Sadio Mane and Mohammed Salah will face each other as Egypt beat Cameroon 3-1 on penalties to reach the Africa Cup of Nations final on Thursday after their last-four tie in Yaounde finished goalless at the end of extra time.

Egypt goalkeeper Mohamed Abou Gabal saved two spot-kicks in the shoot-out before Cameroon’s Clinton Njie missed, sending the record seven-time African champions through to Sunday’s final against Senegal.

Egypt are the most successful nation in Afcon history with seven tournament victories, but were up against a big challenge tonight as the Cameroonian side aimed to deliver glory on home soil.

Cameroon topped Group A before beating Comoros in the round of 16, in a game overshadowed by a fatal crash. Toni Conceicao’s side then beat Gambia 2-0 in the quarter-finals to reach the last four, and have the tournament’s two top goalscorers so far in captain Vincent Aboubakar and Lyon forward Karl Toko Ekambi.

Egypt finished second in Group D after losing their opening game to Nigeria, but Salah scored the winning penalty to see off Ivory Coast in the round of 16 and scored again as they came from behind to beat Morocco in the quarter-finals. And he was not needed tonight as goalkeeper Gabal made two penalties saves.
